Martha Dix (nee Davis) (ABRAHAM'S SISTER) (6 June 1800 - 1878)
Martha Davis was christened on the 6 June 1800 at Saint Mary the Virgin, Church of England, Bishopstone, Wiltshire, England. Her parents were John Davis and Mary Edmonds. She was a younger sister to Abraham Hopkins Davis.
On the 8 December 1818, Martha was a witness to the marriage of her brother Abraham Hopkins Davis and his wife Mary Ann Davis (nee Williams) at the Church of St Martin, Outwich, Westminster, London, England.
Martha married Thomas Dix on the 22 September 1819 at the Parish of Saint James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England.
They had three sons and three daughters:
13 August 1822 - Mary Ann Dix born at Threadneedle Street, London. Baptised at Surrey Chapel, Blackfriars Road, Lady Huntingdon's, Southward, Surrey, England on 3 January 1823. In the 1841 census, aged 15, she is living with her grandparents John and Mary Davis at St. Gregory by Saint Paul, London, England. John is listed as a bookseller.
2 April 1826 - Henry Dix christened at St John the Evangelist, Edward Street, Lambeth, London. Thomas is listed as a bookseller. Abode is Edward Street.
3 February 1828 - James Dix christened at St John the Evangelist, Edward Street, Lambeth, London. Thomas is listed as a bookseller. Abode is Duke Street.
1833 - Jane Dix born at Middlesex, Clerkenwell, London. Baptised at Surrey Chapel, Blackfriars Road, Lady Huntingdon's, Southward, Surrey, England. She married Henry Buss in 1872 at the age of 39. Henry was a doctor and a widower. Thomas, Martha's husband was a witness.
2 Jan 1836 - Emma Dix born. Baptised at Surrey Chapel, Blackfriars Road, Lady Huntingdon's, Southward, Surrey, England on 28 October 1836.
1841 Census - Martha Dix (41) and Thomas living at Goswell Street with children Mary (16 - included but staying with John and Mary Davis), James (12), Jane (9), Emma (5) and Thomas (3).
20 Nov 1841 - Edward christened on 3 April 1842 - 21 Garnault Place, New River Heads (borough of Islington, Middlesex). Thomas is listed as a bookseller.
1851 Census - Martha Dix (51) and James (23), Jane (18), Edward (9) living at 10 Amwell Street, Clerkenwell - Thomas not there. Martha gives birthplace as Wallingford, Berkshire. Can't find Thomas elsewhere at present.
1861 Census - Thomas (63) and Martha (61) are visiting James and Nancy Shaw in Twickenham. James Shaw is a law stationer born in Lambeth. Thomas is listed as a fundholder.
1871 Census - Thomas (73) and Martha (71) living at 10 Amwell Street, Clerkenwell, London, England. Thomas is listed as a properietor of houses and his birthdate would be about 1788 and his birthplace City of London. Jane, their daughter, aged 38, is still living with them. Martha gives birthplace as Wallingford, Berkshire.
Thomas died on the 2 February 1878. He was 80. His will was as follows:
"Personal Estate under 25,000 pounds. The Will with a Council of Thomas Dix late of 10 Amwell Street, Clerkenwell in the county of Middlesex who died 2 February 1878 at 10 Amwell Street was proved at the Principal Registry by John Henry Lloyd of Jackson's-lane Highgate in the said County Wine Merchant Arthur Wellesley Penrose of 18 Lloyd Square Pentonville in the said County Chemist and James Dix of 1 Harman-Ville Wood-lane Highgate Gentleman the Son of Executors."
Martha died in 1878 in Holborn, Middlesex, London, England. She was 78.
