Robert Debney (1785 - 30 Jul 1864)
Robert Debney is my great, great, great, great grandfather.
Robert Debney was christened on 19 November 1786 to Richard Debney and Sarah Debney (nee Fisher) at Cratfield, Suffolk, England. Many believe he married a Swinton but this is a Robert JOHN Debney from the same county.
The first we see of Robert is when he marries Rebecca Baber on 6 October 1808 at St George, Hanover Square, Westminster, London, England.
His wife Rebecca died as a result of child birth and was buried on 3 January 1812 at St Luke, Finsbury, Middlesex, Islington, London, England.
Five days later on 8 January 1812, their first and only child Rebecca Sarah Debney was christened at St Luke, Finsbury, Middlesex, Islington, London, England. The child's second name is derived from Robert's mother's name.
On 2 October 1814 he married Margaretta Margaret Rennie at Saint Benet Fink, London, England.
He was an Upholsterer, Brushmaker and Farmer.
Robert and Margaretta had 4 children
1. George Robert Debney born 1816 at St Giles without Cripplegate, London, England.
2. Margaretta Debney born in the Parish of St Leonard's Shoreditch, London, England on 11 July 1818 and christened 6 July 1819 in St Mary Whitechapel, London, England. Died 1885.
3. Hepzibah Debney born 1820. Died 1879.
4. Robert Debney born 1834. Died 1844.
In 1838 he arrived on board the ship "Lloyds" with wife Margaretta, their 4 children and Rebecca Sarah, the daughter of his first marriage. He was 53 years old.
Their youngest son Robert died in 1844.
In 1852 the family bought 30 acres around Burnside. Robert and Margaretta settled just north of Second Creek in a stone cottage which they extended. In 1864 it was described as a large stone and brick house with detached kitchen.
Robert died on 30 July 1864 at Burnside, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. He was 77 years old. He is buried at Road 3, Path 12, Site 19, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide next to his son George Robert Debney.
Margaretta (Margaret) died 19 November 1865 in Adelaide, South Australia and is buried with her husband Robert.
