Samuel Kerbey (7 Feb 1807 - 5 Aug 1863)
Samuel Kerbey is my great, great, great grandfather.
At this stage we are unsure of who Samuel Kerbey's family are. He was born on 7 February 1807 in Glouster, Gloustershire, England.
He was a Miner.
He marries his first wife Mary Shear on 16 September 1827 at Stroud, St Lawrence, Gloucestershire, England.
He came to Australia on the 23 January 1839 from England on board ship "Resource" with his first wife Mary Kerbey (nee Shear) and three children (one is named Martha (his second daughter)).
On 20 Jun 1840, Hannah Maria Kerbey was born in Adelaide. Hannah later went on to marry Thomas Henry Merrett in Victoria on the 8 April 1865.
In 1842, John Kerbey is born. He dies 13 October 1850.Samuel is first listed in the "South Australian Newspaper" on 14 February 1845 signing his name to a Memorial by the Colonists of South Australia against the introduction of convicts to the State. He is listed as living in Halifax Street in the city of Adelaide. 1675 signatures were received against bringing convicts to South Australia at this time.
On 22 September 1846, George William Kerbey is born (mother is Mary Shear).
Whilst Samuel is still married to Mary, Susannah Roche becomes pregnant to him.
Their first child is born:
1. George James Kerbey - born November 1846. He died a year later on 14 May 1847.
Mary Kerbey, Samuel's first wife dies on the 11 July 1847.
About six months later on the 10 January 1848 he marries Susannah Roche in the Church of St John, Halifax Street, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Then came:
2. Robert William Kerbey -born 1 February 1849. He died 2 August 1853.
2. Catherine Kerbey - born 4 July 1850. She died about two years later on 8 Nov 1852.
3. Susannah Kerbey - born 26 April 1852. She died aged around 10 years on 2 Nov 1862.
4. Thomas Henry Kerbey - born 1 June 1853. He died aged around four on 24 May 1857.
5. Our Elizabeth Georgina Kerbey - born 19 September 1855. Elizabeth survived. She died on 26 Mar 1908.
6. Lastly there was Susannah Jeanette Kerbey - born 1859. Susannah Jeanette survived.
On 9 November 1860, Samuel sees one of his daughter's from his first marriage (Martha) marry Samuel Peacock Kingsley in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Samuel Kerbey died on 5 August 1863.
The "South Australian Register" Newspaper dated 6 August 1863 wrote:
KERBEY - On the 5th August, at his residence, Halifax-street, Adelaide, Mr Samuel Kerbey, aged 56 years.
And the 6 August 1863 in the newspaper:
THE FRIENDS OF THE LATE MR SAMUEL KERBEY are respectfully informed that his FUNERAL will leave his residence, Halifax Street, for the cemetery, on Friday 7th instant.
Samuel is buried with his wife Susannah at Road 3, Part 8, Site 2, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. She died in 1883.
Between 27 January and 8 February 1879, Susannah Kerbey writes in the local paper wanting to rent a 4-5 bedroom house in East or South Adelaide.
Susannah dies in 1883.
