Susannah Kerbey (nee Roche) (1817 - 5 Mar 1883)
Susannah Kerbey (nee Roche) is my great, great, great grandmother.
At this stage we are unsure of who Susannah Kerbey's family are. We think she was born in 1817 in Cornwall, England.
Susannah becomes pregnant to Samuel Kerbey whilst he is married to his wife Mary.
Their first child is born:
1. George James Kerbey - born November 1846. He died a year later on 14 May 1847.
Mary Kerbey, Samuel's first wife dies on the 11 July 1847.
About six months later on the 10 January 1848 she marries Samuel Kerbey in the Church of St John, Halifax Street, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Then came:
2. Robert William Kerbey -born 1 February 1849. He died 2 August 1853.
2. Catherine Kerbey - born 4 July 1850. She died about two years later on 8 Nov 1852.
3. Susannah Kerbey - born 26 April 1852. She died aged around 10 years on 2 Nov 1862.
4. Thomas Henry Kerbey - born 1 June 1853. He died aged around four on 24 May 1857.
5. Our Elizabeth Georgina Kerbey - born 19 September 1855. Elizabeth survived. She died on 26 Mar 1908.
6. Lastly there was Susannah Jeanette Kerbey - born 1859. Susannah Jeanette survived.
Samuel Kerbey died on 5 August 1863.
The "South Australian Register" Newspaper dated 6 August 1863 wrote:
KERBEY - On the 5th August, at his residence, Halifax-street, Adelaide, Mr Samuel Kerbey, aged 56 years.
This strange account in the newspaper dated 21 September 1865 - FOR SALE - CHEAP, a tame Emu. Apply to Mrs Kerbey, next to the Mill, Halifax Street.
In 26 June 1878, Susannah's youngest daughter Susannah Jeanette writes in the newspaper asking for apprentices to dressmaking and to apply to her (Miss Kerbey) at Halifax Street, West.
Between 27 January and 8 February 1879, Susannah Kerbey writes in the local paper wanting to rent a 4-5 bedroom house in East or South Adelaide. She never moves because on Halifax Street on 5 March 1883 she dies from apoplexy.
Susannah is buried with Samuel at Road 3, Part 8, Site 2, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
On the 15 March to 27 March 1883 and not long after Susannah's death, Susannah's youngest daughter Susannah Jeanette writes in the newspapers to her customers that she has moved from Halifax Street to Pirie Street, two doors east of Union Bank.
On the 11 April 1883, a notice in the paper states:
